(More customer reviews).. you do ask yourself: is almost one fifty for a set of strings reasonable? And I'm tempted to say no. But I had these same thomastik strings on my 4 string short scale fretless. I also had them on my violin bass. And I had them on my 1965 Precision. And I loved them. Supple, rich, low tension, sound great for years. And then I sold my momma's tail at the county fair, and got enough moolah together to buy a 6 string set for my big green fretless. And I lost them. In the house somewhere. "Misplaced" is what they call it. Meanwhile I was playing Chromes on the big 6 string. And then I broke the high C string, but since I had misplaced the "weight in gold" Thomastiks, I crimped and soldered the Chromes C string back together between the nut and the tuner. And kept playing.
Then one day I said to Jules, the studio rat, "Jules, do you think the Precision sounds too much like the BeatlesBass?" and he lifted his snout and nodded. So I went fishing in the Strings Box, and dug out a new $17.99 set of Dunlop Nickel Roundwounds, and put the Thomastiks in a plastic string case (I label them carefully), and the Dunlops sounded pumpin' on the Precision. So then all was groovey, and one day I was playing the 4 string shortscale flatwound and I looked up at Jules, the Studio rat, and he looked back at me and nodded. Jules and I understand each other. So I went fishing in the Strings Box and dug out a set of Ken Smith Half-Rounds, ground-rounds I think he calls them, to give the short fretless more bite. They had never sounded great on anything, and they always played like a cross between sandpaper and a rat tail file, but now they sounded intriguing on the little fretless, enough to keep them there. The big Placid Blue Rondo SX $99 Jazz 5 string was cruisin' on stainless steel Rostosounds, the ones that outlast empires and dynasties, and as it's absurd to pay more for strings than for the instrument, I won't ever put Thomastiks on THAT one. So only the violin bass had Thomastiks on it. It's probably not the most flattering combination, when you have a choice. By then my wife found the 6 string set (that I had sold my momma's tail for), and I think I'll put them on the big greenie, but I'm not even sure.
So the moral of the story is this: Thomastik flatwound bass strings are amazing. They sound great and last forever. They are low tension yet never feel floppy. They feel ALIVE, and sound great. BUT if you buy Thomastiks when the Dollar is low, and all your basses are outfitted with Thomastik flatwounds, you WILL end up selling yo' momma to buy more, and by then you might tire of them, and then what? So start with just one bass set up with Thomastik JF's, and let the mirabilous wondrus sound and feel sink in, and if you dig it, like it should be dug, then wait for a dip in the Euro and buy a 6 string set that you can use on a 6, 5, or 4 string bass. If you put it on a 4 string, have some luthier build an instrument around the leftover 2 strings. See what I mean? At THAT price, your head starts playin' tricks on you. It would be easier if they weren't so good.
If you play guitar and want a low tension "steel string acoustic" set, try Thomastik plectrum AC110, they include flatwound bronze on silk/steel strings?!. And for a classical guitar, try their low tension S Series KR116, that includes nylon and silvered copper flatwound on steel rope core. Expensive, but musically, you will be stoked.
