(More customer reviews)I've been playing with the Black Beauties exclusively for about 4 years.I used Hi-beams before that (which are also great, but not quite the same caliber).I believe that DR makes the best bass strings out there.I've tried everything: Rotosound, Dean Markley, Labella, Elixir...the list goes on but none compare to the BBs.They last forever and have an awesome crisp sound that makes for good, beefy and clear lows, and pronounced singing highs.I use them on my Warwick Thumb and am a customer for life.

DR Strings Hot Pink - Extra-Life Pink Coated Bass 45-105 Review

(More customer reviews)LOVE these strings.I got them because they were pink and thought they looked a little more girly on my charcoal gray Dynabass.When I got them on, I really loved them for their quality.These things last FOREVER and after almost a year (YES,I said a YEAR) I still only have to SLIGHTLY tune when I get ready to play.The pink did wear off a little on the E sting where a pick was used, but it isnt that noticeable.I finger pick so if I had not let someone else use a pick on them, I am sure they would still have all the pink all them. The strings are really smooth with hardly any screeching noise or snagging when I slide my fingers up and down the fret board. The only thing smoother were those plastic coated strings, but I think you sacrifice sound quality with those...not these, they have a really clean, mellow tone that I use playing contemporary Christian and soft rock.Have seen them in peacock blue which looked really cool, but the pink strings have sort of become my signature.Just wish these weren't so hard to find.

(More customer reviews)I've used these on a Precision bass (P-bass) and they are VERY nice! These are equal to the reputable D'Addario XL Chrome flatwounds that are so popular. I've used both strings and, honestly, cannot tell a different in feel or tone--AT ALL! If you are looking to bring out that classic, warm, punchy, "boom" tone you heard on all those Motown hits--this is the kind of string set to get. Put these on a P-bass and you'll be pumping out a full, warm tone with plenty of punch. These are stainless steel strings so they are a little bit stiffer than the nickel strings that you might be used to. These take a little getting used to but once you're used them, they feel softer and have plenty of pop to give you a good punch in your tone. Most flats are stainless steel and roundwounds are commonly nickel so if you're switching over from rounds, expect to have sore fingers for a week or so. Stainless strings are a little bit louder than nickel too, but you should still try to have your action as low as possible (without excess fret buzz) to make it easier on your fingers to deal with these strings. These strings will give you the warmth and punch that has been the standard bass tone on hit records from the 60's until today. The most famous and ubiquitous bass tone is flatwound strings (like these) on a Fender Precision bass. For all-purpose, fits in nearly any style, "work horse" bass tone you can't go wrong with that combo. These strings will get you there.

(More customer reviews)While I use many other strings for my 4 strings, in fact currently enjoying a surprisingly good sounding set of Famous #351 on my Fender P Bass 4 Famous #351 Strings Bass Guitar String Set (Medium Gauge) , for my Fender P Bass 5 there is only ONE set of strings that will do, and that is Blue Steels. With other 5 strings the B goes dead and lifeless all too quickly, and the warmth of the tone just dies out. With the Blue steels the bottom stays fat and juicy, and the highs sparkling, for several months of hard rocking. You really can't beat a good P-5 and Blue steels, the combo will never let you down.

D'Addario Bass Strings Set, Half Round, 50-105, Long Review

(More customer reviews)I normally play flatwound strings, so this was a slight change for me.I've been playing bass for 20 years now, and I started out with roundwounds (Blue Steels, etc.).But when I bought my Ibanez bass (which creates a brighter and more active sound than a Fender Jazz, for example), I compensated with easier-to-play flatwound strings, which I've played with for the last ten years or more.This time I wanted a little more brightness and attack in my sound so that I could have a little more presence on stage, and that's what I got.We play a lot of Rush, Yes, U2, Pink Floyd, etc., so these strings added just what I wanted.
The only "problem" was that it took a week or so for my fingers to adjust because they no longer slide as easily as they did on flatwound strings.So this means that the callouses and frets will wear just a little bit more (though certainly not nearly as much as with roundwounds), and my fingers have to move a little extra to compensate for not being able to slide without creating string noise, but it wasn't that big of a deal.
Now, I understand that my setup is nothing like what Geddy plays.So I already know, of course, that I'm playing different strings (no Rush pun intended) than he plays.However, the combination of my strings and bass create a sound that is very similar to his, and that's what matters.
Overall, I really like the strings.In the end, these halfwounds are just a tweak and an experiment with my sound that happened to turn out well for me.

(More customer reviews)These are some really great strings if you like playig funk or you just want to sound like Flea. They're great for the lows and sound clear even if you tune them real low. I wouldn't recommend them for someone who plays jazz or R and B or any type of music where the bass is so far in the background you're not sure if its there. They have a bright sound especially when your slapping them so they tend to stand out even in the middle of a full band. Use them wisely.
