(More customer reviews)I have been wanting this little bass for a long time, and finally decided to purchase it, even though I had never had an opportunity to test one.Worse decision ever.For me, the bass is virtually unplayable.It's not so much that the strings are too close together for my playing style, but it's the fact that the strings do not stay in tune.Because this is a fretless bass, adjustments can be made relatively quickly, but when you play "positions" like I do, and the position does not remain in tune over very short time spans, the frustration level rises exponentially.Not recommended for any serious bassists.

(More customer reviews)I have searched far and wide for an acoustic bass that has good tone, volume, clarity and warmth. These basses have all four. I really just love these basses, the tone is just fantastic. The volume is way way better than other basses I have tried, largely due to the suspended bracing that lets the top move like a speaker cone. You can get a lot of volume if you really dig in, but it also has a great dynamic range you can get great tone playing soft and the harder you dig in the bigger the tone. These basses really sing and are a pleasure to play. They are by far the best I have found for less than $1000. Highly Highly recommended.

Offering a combination of traditional materials and high-tech design, this fretless 4-string acoustic-electric bass guitar from Boulder Creek (model EBR3-N4F) enables you to hear your playing without plugging it in. The side port on the top projects the deep tones from the body directly to the player while the additional front port shoots the low frequencies towards the audience. When plugged in, it keeps the same natural tone with much less feedback than other acoustic electric basses.
All Boulder Creek guitars feature solid tops, solid backs, and laminated sides for strength and durability. The EBR3-N4F uses Boulder Creek's Solitaire body, which employs the Suspended Bracing System (SBS). A departure from the traditional X-brace, the SBS employs a pair of parallel aluminum braces that are anchored at three points under the top, but are otherwise suspended like a pair of towel racks. This allows the top to vibrate more freely, improving projection. The area of the top is also greater, with a soundhole the size of half-dollar and a large oval port on the side, dramatically improving bass response.
It's also equipped with the AB4-T Active Balanced Acoustic System with on-board tuner. The specially designed cable-type saddle transducer reduces the "clunk" that is inherent in traditional piezo pickup systems. The AB4-T System also feature both balanced and unbalanced outputs for maximum signal and noise reduction in both stage and studio applications.

Dean Upright Fretless Pace Bass, Classic Black, with Case Review

(More customer reviews)I couldn't be happier with the Pace Upright.I received it as a Christmas gift after having been interested in it for some time.It is, as others on various forms have written, a great bridge between modern electric basses and standard uprights.Having been playing fretless nearly exclusively for a couple years, the note-finding was very easy and the playability is easy and smooth.The sound isn't a standard fretless sound, nor is it distinctly an upright sound, but a good melding of the two into a very unique instrument.The piezo pickup is lively and strong, the tuning pegs/keys are solid and it holds tune extremely well.No tone control, but any eq'ing you need is easily done at the amplifier level - plenty of room to work with as far as the bass signal.The stand is much sturdier than I had anticipated as well, very well-done as far as construction and it is very solid.The only complaint is possibly that it is a bridge and bowing is not really an option, but even having said that I couldn't be happier with this instrument and the new sounds/feels it has added to my arsenal.

Dean Acoustic-Electric Bass Fretless Satin Finish Review

This Dean fretless bass guitar was beautiful looking in its construction (fit and finish) and it had a somewhat big, satisfying sound acoustically; certainly better than any Michael Kelly or Ibanez acoustic bass at twice the price or more.It also sounded good plugged in.The tuner worked fine.But if you can believe it, the strings on this fretless bass buzzed at the first and second fret positions on the A and E strings.Trussrod adjustments did not remedy the problem.This was because either the trussrod was not working/attached properly, or as I believe, the neck was warped in TWO places: one at the first and second fret area (improper planing of the neck) and the other where the neck/fretboard meets the guitar body.So I returned the product. What a shame - if the manufacturer had only spent a little more time on the quality of the neck this $250 instrument would be a steal!Incidently, the description of this guitar says the body has a "satin finish";it is actually gloss. I returned the guitar.

So you don't get yet another compilation of scales to practice, but you do get a tip to set up a drone tone to practice your intonation with. It's one of the best books I've seen for basic stuff like setup and string replacement and one of the few that will answer most of your questions about fretless.
