DiMarzio DP123 Model J Bass Pickup Set, Black Review

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased a set of DP123 pickups for my made-in-Mexico (MIM) Fender Jazz Bass. When I began to install them, I noticed that the bridge pickup wasn't going to fit into the body of the bass.

This problem is NOT DiMarzios fault.

Fender decided to use a the same size pickup in both postions on the MIM basses, while their American Basses use a slightly larger pickup on the bridge.

To their credit, when I called DiMarzio about how to proceed, they just said "Send us the pickup and we'll give you one the right size. They rapidly shipped me the new pickup and I was up and running in no time at all.

If you're somewhat technical, replacing pickups is pretty easy.
Simply loosen the strings, remove the pick-guard and the electronics cover. You need to have a soldering iron strong enough to be able to desolder/resolder the ground wire on the back of the volume pots. Just follow the wiring instructions that come with the pickups and you're all set.

The new pickups are very warm and punchy. They're humbucking pickups, so they're very clean sounding and growl nicely once you get above 8 or so on the volume pot. Compared with the stock pickups the Model J's really shine. My MIM bass now sounds great!

Fender® Squier® Classic Vibe 60's Precision Bass - Fiesta Red Review

(More customer reviews)I used to be a Squier snob, however when the Classic 50's and 60's basses came out I changed my opinion. I own one of each. I have had a Fender MIA Jazz bass and I do not claim to compare it to the American Fenders however MIM's do not have anything on this CV 60's P. Excellent feel, tone, and looks are incredibly beautiful! I had a Classic 50's Precision Fender bass in Fiesta Red and hated the color as it looked like "Hot Pink" to me, however the first time I laid eyes on this bass I fell in love with it. It was gorgeous! Then I took it down to play and was hooked.
This is the absolute best bang for the buck bass you can buy. The tuners are smooth turning, has a heavy duty bridge with brass saddles. I usually change pickups on guitars and basses (including the MIA Fender Jazz I had). The only exceptions have been a Gibson ES-137C guitar and the Classic Vibe 50's and 60's P basses I now own. That is how much I think of the tone I am getting. These are NO slouches!

(More customer reviews)I bought these to replace my MIM Deluxe Active J-Bass pickups and noticed the difference immediately.They have that classic, full, well-rounded vintage Fender sound with great response and no hum.I also just love the little stylish 'noiseless' logo on the pickup covers.My stock pickups were a little bit weak sounding and I've found that these handle treble better (if you're into that kind of thing).Have that great fender twang and can cover a wide variety of styles and sounds.I can play everything from smooth, thick and clean to standard rock'n'roll to some sharp, heavy riffs a la Motorhead, Death From Above 1979, etc.

Fender Custom Shop 60s J-Bass Pickup Set Review

(More customer reviews)I replaced the stock pickups on my 2005 American Jazz Bass (not the Deluxe) with these.The output seems about the same, but the sound is clearer, more solid, tigher and fuller in the bass, and less present in the treble.The original pickups had more sound options, and were brighter, but these sound better to me than any of the myriad sounds the originals had. Overall, they're more "hi-fi" than stock, but not sterile. I play classic rock style originals, mostly for home recording.These are completely quiet and suit that purpose very well. I don't think these pickups are particularly good for slap, but they may work well for slap with the addition of a treble boost pedal of some sort.

ThisFENDER JAZZ bass has a 1 piece maple neck with black binding and black rectangular fret markers.
20 medium jumbo frets with a 9.50"neck radius.
2 Vintage jazz bass single coil pick ups and a vintage Leo Quan Bad Ass II Bridge.
This also Boasts an alder bodyand vintage 70's stamped open gear tuning machines.
This bass was a favorite among musicians for many reasons. quality workmanship, great tone sparkle and these were very road worthy, able to widthstand the abuse that comes with being a touring band.
I would suggest trying this bass out even if you dont play a Fender.

I tried a lot of basses in stores in a higher price range, but didn't get to try this one. After seeing so many positive reviews and videos online of this instrument I decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did b/c it's definitely worth every penny.

Dear Epiphone Customer,

We regret to inform you that we have discovered that a SMALL percentage of defective T-PRO(tm) pickups were installed in some of our Epiphone Thunderbird PRO-V basses (5-string ONLY). These pickups were incorrectly made and therefore, cause the low-B string (or 5th string) to have a very low output level (ie: low volume) relative to the other 4 strings. While all PRO-V basses are NOT affected, the extent of the problem dictates that we notify you of this potential defect and take immediate action to correct it.

* If you purchased an Epiphone Thunderbird PRO-V (5-string) bass and the output level of the low-B string is LOW (ie: much quieter than the other 4 strings) please contact our Customer Service department either by email or by phone as follows. Remember - please check your bass first. Not all PRO-V's are affected. PRO-IV's (4-strings) do not have this problem.

* Additionally, we are in the process of testing all Thunderbird PRO-V basses at our authorized Epiphone retailers worldwide to determine if they need pickup replacements. The Duncan Pups sound really good too! I have been playing for 30 years - I have played and owned the best of the best basses including Fender Custom Shop and Fodera - you will not be disappointed in this instrument - Fender really outdid themselves on this inexpensive little Axe. Almost all the Harmony Central reviews are all 9 or 10's!BTW - I am playing thru a Markbass 1X12 combo - recorded with the external Mic on my iPhone - just laying near the amp.

Building Walking Bass Lines (Bass Instruction) Review

(More customer reviews)When I first purchased Building Walking Bass Lines, I knew how to read notes in the lower five frets of the bass, and played bass at a high beginner's level.I'm also a full-time college teacher (business), so I know solid teaching of any kind when I see it.

Unlike other books on walking bass lines I'd tried to learn from, this book got me walking over chord changes quickly and fluidly, and with a minimum amount of pain.

Friedland gives a brief overview of how to read notes on the electric bass, briefly discusses how to construct chords, and then launches into the clearest and most gradual explanation of how to walk over chord changes I've ever seen.He has a lot of "hands-on", play-along exercises at the end of each concept, and they're stripped of unecessary complexity so you can see the concepts clearly.

A major strength of this book is how you see results in your playing immediately, which encourages you to keep practicing.It's important for anyone learning something for the first time to see immediate progress in their ability, and Friedland has written this book to achieve just that.

The exercises get more and more difficult as you go along, but were never out of reach for me. The end of the book gives the chord changes to 10 jazz standards.

After working through this book, I knew enough to hold my own in a gigging fusion band with some ex-music teachers and university graduates in music.

Also, I found the concepts I learned in the this book made me a better rock and folk player, because I understood how to construct interesting bass lines under chords in any style -- all this was an outgrowth of my jazz knowledge gained from the book.

Anyone who writes that this book is "too easy" or "too basic" is actually complementing Friedland, because it takes a master to dissect a complex topic into something everyone can understand.

(More customer reviews)I have played many bass guitars and this one is definitely one of my top favorites. It both looks and sounds great. This bass has a very clean and bright sound. It's hardware and pickups are very good quality, and the 3-piece body is seamless. I love playing this bass and I do so everyday. One of the best features about this bass is the price. For the quality of it, I would be willing to pay twice as much. Compared to a Fender Jazz bass, it is really the same thing, just stamped with Squier. I am expecting this instrument to last me for years to come.

Chord Studies for Electric Bass: Guitar Technique (Workshop (Berklee Press)) Review

The book comprises exercises based around the chord tones of each of the chord types listed (major, minor, dominant seventh, minor 7, m7b5, diminished) with APPROACH notes. Yes, these approach notes are scale tones, but the emphasis of the Chord Studies book is on studying chord tones/qualities for each of the chord types in the book.

Each section (C major, C minor, C7, etc, F major, F minor, F7 etc etc) has 3 relatively simple 'approach note' exercises, followed by 2 much more awkward exercises with approach notes and chord tensions.

The book presents these exercises in all 15 keys (the 12 common keys and the 3 enharmonic equivalents). This is so that, if studied closely, you may have experience in reading all key signatures.

This work is based upon the now out-of-print Chord Studies for Trombone, written by Joseph Viola and Phil Wilson. As this trombone work was written in bass clef, I imagine it was pretty easy to apply to bass.

My current teacher, Jeff Berlin, sets me exercises from the original trombone book, and assures me that this book is the same in content as his original trombone-related book.

As to 'how to use' this book - well - it's relatively straightforward, but time consuming. Currently, I take each exercise and play it in all 12 keys. Yes, including the two 16th-note exercises at the end of each chord section. The exercises alter both as the book goes through each chord quality (maj, min, etc) and also as the key signature changes, so what you get is an absolutely thorough workout of the common chord types in all key signatures, with differing levels of ornamentation with approach notes and chord tensions.

Please note - the only exercises that I have not done in all 12 keys are the two 16th note etudes at the end of the dominant 7 chord section - the approach notes and use of chord tensions makes the tonality a little hinky, and Jeff has said to me he doesn't feel it's necessary to do the dominant structures in all 12 keys, although the other chord qualities should be done in all 12 keys.

In the recent time since I started using this material, I have noted a significant improvement in my soloing and my ability to memorise/play phrases in all 12 keys. I seem to have picked up a few of these things as little 'licks' too.

There is easily a year's worth of work here, and likely more. Although I do note I am getting faster as I continue through.

There is no CD - but it really isn't the point. The point is to improve your reading and improve your 'hearing' of the different chord types, as well as incorporating some of these things into your playing.

The only thing I find a nuisance is all of the annotations below the exercises which are meant to tell you which strings to play them on. Fortunately, these are only found in the key of C major - all the other keys are clear of them. Visually, quite annoying, and most people will work out their own fingerings, which I would have thought was also part of the point of this.

Overall, though, this book is absolutely solid musical information, and is not, I think, intended as a reference work, but a book for extended and intense study. For the money, it's cheap. But you will pay in terms of spending many hours on your instrument.
