(More customer reviews)This is the second Strobostomp I've bought. The first one was a used VSS (the older, blue one) from ebay and after a few weeks of use, the output signal got low and weak, like I'd turned the volume knob on my guitar almost all the way off. I was never able to figure out why, but I chalked it up to a learned lesson for buying used gear from ebay. Also, the VSS had plastic (!) board mounted input jacks.
So I saw that the new Strobostomp2 is advertised as having metal Neutrik jacks. Figuring they improved the hardware design, I bought a brand new one. Right out of the box the display flickered when I inserted the guitar cord into the input jack and continued to flicker as I wiggled the cord.
I tuned my guitar and stepped on the foot switch and was greeted by a loud POP, (not cool) then no signal. I got an intermittent signal by wiggling the cord in the jack. (My cord is fine, so that's not the issue). The problem oddly went away after this initial episode and it didn't give me any problems during a long recording session and a band rehearsal.
Then came my first gig with the Strobostomp 2. Halfway through our set, the band launches into a song without me. No signal! Suspecting the flaky jack, I gently kicked the side of it with my foot and it came back to life, only to cut back out a few seconds later. I bent down and wiggled the cord in the input jack. The signal came back, then cut out again. Last straw! I removed the hunk of garbage from my signal chain for good. It's going back to the store.
I'm extremely disappointed in this tuner. It's supposed to be ruggedly built and is advertised as such, but taking it apart, it's appalling how plasticky and cheaply it's built. The new metal jacks look like the old ones, only now the female end is metal. They're still have a plastic housing and they're still cheesily mounted on the printed circuit board.
For $200 I expected much better quality than this. It's a shame, because the virtual strobe technology is very, very good. Peterson has a good name; I can't understand why they would allow themselves to tarnish it with such a badly built product. If I could rate it lower than 1 in the reliability category I would.
